Stay safe from job scams

Warning signs of a fake job and how to report one.

The Nchito app is on its way. These guides describe it as it will work at launch.

Most jobs are genuine, but some listings and messages are written to take your money or your personal details. These signs help you spot them.

Warning signs

  • You are asked to pay. A fee for an application, an interview, training, a uniform, a medical or a work permit before you are hired. Applying for a job through Nchito costs nothing.
  • The offer is too good. A high salary for little experience, or a job offered without an interview.
  • The details are vague. No company name, no address, or a company you cannot find anywhere else.
  • Pressure to act now. "Only today", "send the money and your documents immediately".
  • Requests for private details early on, such as bank details, a copy of your national registration card or mobile money PINs.
  • Contact moves off the record quickly, for example to a private WhatsApp number with no company name.

Before you go to an interview

  • Look the company up and check its address and phone number.
  • Meet in a public place or at a real office, during the day.
  • Tell someone where you are going and when you expect to be back.

Report a job

If a listing looks wrong, report it from the job page in the Nchito app. Choose the reason that fits best:

  • Scam: asks for money, or looks fraudulent.
  • Misleading: false or misleading details.
  • Expired: the job is already filled or closed.
  • Discriminatory.
  • Duplicate: the same job listed more than once.
  • Other: add a few words about what is wrong.

You do not need an account to report a job. The Nchito team reviews every report and can close or remove the job. A report on its own does not take a job down, so the team checks it first.

If you have already paid

Keep the messages and payment receipts, and report the matter to the Zambia Police. You can also tell us through the contact page so we can review the listing.
